Alpine mountaineering and tourism (in the former Valley Courtroom)
When the beauty of our valley was discovered in the 18th century, an inflow of scientists, nature lovers, painters and hikers began bit by bit. Before 1800, guests could only stay overnight down in the valley. During the first half of the 19th century, inns were built on Wengernalp and Scheidegg, and around the mid-century inns were built in Mürren and Wengen. After 1850 came the great era of alpine mountaineering with the first ascent of our mountain peaks. Down in the valley, roads and paths were constructed and around 1890 railway lines followed. After 1910, winter tourism brought to us the biggest economical upswing which, however, was interrupted by World War I. Particularly skiing became the quintessence of winter sports within a few decades.
